The Unbeatable's first drone teases an analog adventure connected a strange foreign world

One of the more interesting game announcements I ran crosswise last year was The Invincible, a "retro-future atompunk" thriller supported on a 1964 sci-fi original past Round generator Stanisław LE. As a long-time fan of Favorable Years and New Wave sci-fi, the visual style and promise of a weird travel to the satellite Regis 3 truly rang my bell. The first full teaser was released today, and I'm happy to say that my ebullience clay intact.

The video unfolds from the view of Dr. Yasna, one of The Invincible's main characters, who disregards the advice of Astrogater Novik and ends up in much thoughtful trouble every bit a result. It's all wonderfully squatty and analog, with sense modality elements—the broken-down dishonourable, spider-equal golem, boxy rover, and even the vague sepia toning—that could come with trabeate off the cover of an Andre Norton paperback. Just as important is the sinister tease of an alien mystery story that threatens the crew, and perhaps even all of manhood. And consider that ray gun! That's what I'm speaking about.

Similar retro-sci fi cues are plant in games the like Journey to the Savage Major planet and The Outer Worlds, merely they're both ironic experiences that hyperbolize the silliness of the ERA to mask their winks and nods at the evils of contemporary capitalist economy. What I desire is something that plays it undiluted: Critique and philosophy is powdery (and an inherent component of some good sci fi, most readers will tell you) but keep that pulpy, early 60's storytelling serious and sincere. Thus far, The Invincible looks set to deliver incisively that.

The one spot of bad news altogether this is that The Invincible is loss to take a trifle longer to arrive than originally anticipated. When it was announced, developer Starward Industries expected to have it out sometime in 2021, but it's now targeted for 2022. Find out more at invinciblethegame.com.
